The UNESCO Jikji Memory of The World Prize was given to the Rare and Special Books Library of the American University in Cairo. The American University in Cairo joins some of the top organisations dedicated to history conservation thanks to this distinguished prize.

The prize presentation is scheduled to take place in Cheongju-si, South Korea, in September

The AUC Rare and Special Books Library, which was established in 1992, is crucial to conserving and recovering Egyptian history.

Starting with just a few collector’s goods, the RBSCL eventually expanded to include old maps of Egypt, oral history archives, old publications, and old AUC archives.

Every two years, UNESCO awards institutions that have made significant contributions to global memory with the Jikji Memory of the World Prize, a USD 30,000 grant.

The award also gives careful consideration to the level of expertise used to handle the documents in question and the existence of any unique circumstances surrounding their acquisition.

The award, which was funded by the Republic of Korea, was established to recognise the inscription found on the world’s oldest moving metal print, the “Buljo jikji simche yojeol.”
