“To Protect Their Value” Egypt Banned Women from Certain Jobs Abroad and It Sparked Controversy

Under these instructions, women are no longer allowed to travel for specific types of jobs, as part of an effort to regulate the labor market and ensure better alignment with professional standards.

Which Jobs Are Included?

The decision focuses on roles that are largely informal or take place in private settings. The banned jobs include domestic work such as

  • home care
  • cooking
  • housekeeping
  • personal assistance
  • home nursing

It also extends to positions in cafes and restaurants, including

  • waitressing
  • counter roles

The Reason Behind the Decision

Officials say the move is intended to protect the rights and dignity of Egyptian women working abroad. Framed as a step to “protect their value,” the decision follows reports highlighting concerns around working conditions in some of these roles, particularly those carried out inside private homes.

Mixed Reactions Online

The announcement quickly sparked debate across social media. Some support the decision, viewing it as a necessary measure to safeguard women from potential exploitation and ensure better working environments.

Others argue that these jobs are not inherently degrading and believe women should have the freedom to choose their work without restrictions.
