In a significant development, Turkey has agreed to provide combat drones to Egypt, marking a milestone in their efforts to normalize relations after a decade of strained ties. Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs Hakan Fidan made this announcement on Sunday, emphasizing the importance of normalization for Egypt to gain access to certain crucial technologies.

Fidan stated in an interview with private television A Haber that they have reached an agreement to supply Egypt with unmanned air vehicles and other advanced technologies. This move signifies a significant step forward in the bilateral relationship between the two nations.

Erdogan is visiting Egypt next week

This announcement comes just days before Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan’s highly anticipated visit to Egypt on February 14th. It will be Erdogan’s first visit to Egypt since 2012 and holds great significance in the context of renewed diplomatic ties.

During his visit, President Erdogan is expected to engage in discussions with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi on a wide range of topics, including bilateral and regional issues such as trade, energy, and security. This meeting is a testament to the progress made in strengthening diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Egypt and Turkey to Strengthen Relations

The diplomatic rift between Turkey and Egypt began in the aftermath of the 2013 ouster of Egypt’s late Muslim Brotherhood rule. However, recent years have witnessed a significant thaw in relations. In November 2022, Presidents El-Sisi and Erdogan briefly met during the World Cup in Qatar and expressed their commitment to enhancing ties, reaffirming their deep historical connections.

As Turkey and Egypt continue to work on normalizing their relations, the agreement to supply combat drones underscores the growing cooperation between the two nations in various fields, ultimately contributing to regional stability and security.
