After the appearance of Egyptian blogger Hadeer Abdel Razek on a local channel sparked a storm of criticism, the Supreme Council for Media Regulation took action against the channel.

They decided to suspend the program “Chai Bel Yasmin” on Al-Nahar TV for six months and impose a fine of 200,000 EGP, issuing a warning for violating media codes, ethical standards, and legal values, as well as breaching regulations that protect the media’s status as a soft power that spreads awareness and safeguards society from moral decline.

In a statement on Tuesday, the council emphasized that this decision is aimed at protecting citizens’ right to enjoy free and fair media and journalism of high professionalism in line with international quality standards, compatible with Egyptian cultural identity.

Violation of Standards and Codes

The decision followed investigations based on complaints received, monitoring by the council, and the harsh criticism on social media regarding the program’s content, which hosted a content creator promoting illegal and immoral behavior. The council confirmed the channel’s responsibility through its legal representative and evidence from watching and transcribing the specific episode.

They stressed that the program violated the guidelines published in the official gazette, which require media institutions not to present content that harms the public interest or insults societal beliefs, and to refrain from broadcasting any pornographic materials or inciting debauchery and immorality.

Hosting Failed Models

The council noted that the media codes prohibit hosting individuals whose cultural values clash with Egyptian culture or encourage viewers to emulate them, emphasizing the importance of adhering to societal principles and avoiding any promotion of immorality.

They also highlighted the necessity for media outlets to comply with laws and codes, steering clear of sensationalism and invasion of personal reputations.

Suspension of the Host

Earlier, the Media Syndicate decided to suspend the host of “Chai Bel Yasmin,” Yasmin El Khatib, following her invitation to Hadeer Abdel Razek on her latest episode and summoned her for questioning.

In a statement, the Syndicate explained that the suspension and investigation of El Khatib were based on her violation of the media charter and code of conduct.

Channel’s Apology and Episode Removal

Meanwhile, the Al-Nahar TV network issued an apology to its audience for airing the interview with Abdel Razek and decided to remove the episode from all its social media platforms.

The network had previously announced on Sunday that it was launching an investigation into the episode’s content, affirming its commitment to values and traditions that it has upheld since its inception.

“Highlighting a Socially Unacceptable Phenomenon”

Yasmin El Khatib apologized to her audience on her Facebook page for the controversial episode, stating that her intention was not to provoke controversy, but to “draw attention to a socially unacceptable phenomenon that is popular,” specifically the TikTok stardom of girls based on vulgarity and provocation.

She added that she did not invite Abdel Razek as a star, but rather as a case study to emphasize her regret over her past actions.

Repeated Scandals

Previously, Hadeer Abdel Razek made headlines in May 2024 when she was arrested by the morals police, facing charges of inciting debauchery and publishing obscene videos. She also released explicit videos with someone, later appearing tearfully in a live broadcast, claiming that the person was her husband and that she had no idea he was filming or who leaked the clip.
