Another day, another Uber driver incident

Yesterday, the Sheikh Zayed Prosecutor’s Office in the Egyptian Giza Governorate decided to refer the Uber driver accused of harassing actress Hala El Said, who had been released on bail, to trial before the misdemeanor court.

The decision included referring the Uber driver to the misdemeanor court on the charge of committing an indecent act, “urinating in a public place.” The defendant, accompanied by his defense, appeared at the prosecutor’s office this morning to announce his referral for trial and to be assigned to attend his trial sessions.

The accused breaks his silence

The accused Uber driver spoke for the first time in a video posted on his lawyer Ali Fayez’s Facebook page, recounting the details of the incident and his feeling of injustice, as he put it, by the actress, emphasizing that she was not harmed in any way.

The driver said in the video: “The incident occurred about a week ago around eleven-thirty in the morning when he received a request from someone named Jalal to go to my city after returning from Sheikh Zayed and heading to the specified location. The client saw a lady and made sure of her request for the car, and when she confirmed to him that she was the client, he picked her up and headed to the specified location.”

He said that “during his stop, he felt a strong need to use the bathroom, especially as he is sick with several diseases and needs to relieve himself at close intervals. He took advantage of the car’s stop and its tinted windows to shield him from view and stopped behind the car to relieve himself. As soon as he unfastened his pants, he was surprised by the lady coming out of the car screaming at him and signaling randomly to passing cars on the road. He tried to calm her down, but she continued to scream and move away from him. At that moment, he had to relieve himself due to his illness, so he moved away from her for several meters and finished relieving himself and returned to her.”

The driver emphasizes that the actress was not harmed in any way

“When he returned to her, he confirmed his intention not to harm her and that he was sick. His urgent need prompted him to realize that she had phoned someone to come and pick her up. She asked him to take her bags out of the car, and he stopped beside her for a few minutes until the person who would pick her up arrived with her consent. Then he drove away in the car, fearing being assaulted by anyone associated with her.”

At the end of his speech, the Uber driver sent a message to the actress Hala El Said, saying: “May God forgive you. I don’t forgive you. I was humiliated in detention and I didn’t do anything, and my life was ruined. I don’t even have a penny, and my brother borrowed the bail money I used to get out.”

The back story

Egyptian actress Hala El Said had revealed about two weeks ago that she had been harassed by one of the drivers of a smart delivery company, confirming her reaction to the driver after he stopped the car and unfastened his belt, saying he was diabetic.

El Said explained through a video posted on her personal Instagram page that she had been harassed by the driver and said, “I am currently standing on the Al-Daba’a Axis,” confirming that she found the driver urinating and getting out of the car, saying to me, “The car has overheated,” and I looked back and found him unfastening his pants, so I got out of the car and ran quickly, only to find him saying to me, “Don’t be afraid, don’t be afraid. I have diabetes and I have to use the bathroom every now and then.”
