Justice is served

The Cairo Criminal Court has sentenced an Uber driver to 15 years in prison for sexually assaulting a woman using a deadly weapon in Nasr City last May. The sentence is subject to appeal.

According to investigations by the Public Prosecution, the driver deactivated the Uber app after picking up the victim to avoid being tracked, then drove her to an isolated area. There, he attempted to sexually assault her using a knife for coercion. The victim resisted, resulting in a physical altercation during which she sustained injuries.

The victim sought help from two passersby, who assisted her and cooperated with the investigation, while the defendant fled the scene. The prosecution also heard testimony from Uber’s legal representative, who confirmed that the driver had not activated the ride notification and had disabled the app shortly after the incident.

Uber provided satellite images showing the route taken by the driver to the crime scene. The representative further stated that Uber had terminated the driver’s account due to multiple sexual harassment complaints and noted that he subsequently created a new account using false documentation.
