$50 Fine, Times Square, and a Quran — One Egyptian Vendor’s Controversial Stand

One Man, One Speaker, and a Daily Fine

Every day, this man sets up his halal cart and fills the air with the sound of the Quran. It’s his daily ritual: serving food while sharing the words of God with anyone passing by, no matter who stops to listen.

But this simple act of faith comes at a price.

Playing amplified audio in Times Square isn’t allowed, so he pays a $50 fine every single day to keep the Quran playing on his speaker.

To him, the fine is a small price to pay for what he sees as his way of spreading peace and faith in a city that never sleeps.

He even shared that many people have found their way to Islam through hearing the verses right there on the bustling sidewalk. One convert was so moved that they gifted him the very speaker he uses now.

Praise, Criticism, and a Bigger Question

While many people online have applauded his commitment including well-known Imam Mishary Rashid Alafasy…

Some argue that the daily fine could be better spent on charity or supporting the community in other ways, and that disruption is not the way to promote Islam.

Yet, for this Egyptian vendor, the answer seems simple.

He believes the blessing and message of the Quran outweigh any fine or rule.

One Cart, Many Conversations

Love it or question it, his story has sparked conversations about faith, respect, and what it really means to share a message with the world.
