His comments quickly triggered outrage, with many accusing him of victim-blaming and fueling a larger conversation about harassment in Egypt.
The internet responded immediately. Content creator Narihan and countless others defended the girl, pointing out that the singer’s remarks shifted blame onto the victim rather than the accused.
Actor Mourad Makram also posted a comment on Facebook suggesting that if the accused should be punished, the girl should be too — though he later deleted the post and apologized, admitting he didn’t have all the facts.
Meanwhile, the accused’s lawyer spoke in a phone interview, claiming he had witnesses who denied the incident and insisting he would do everything possible to secure his client’s release.
He labeled the girl’s claims as false, further intensifying online debate about harassment, accountability, and legal procedure.
The controversy has become more than a single case. Videos and posts questioning why harassment is still defended and why victim-blaming persists have gone viral, sparking heated discussions about societal attitudes toward women, personal expression, and accountability.
Many argue that comments like Shakoush’s perpetuate harmful narratives that excuse harassers and silence victims.
The case started with viral videos of a girl, who alleged she was harassed on a public bus. In the footage, she records the man attempting to steal her phone while he comments on her clothes, asking, “what are you even wearing?” Despite witnesses on the bus, no one intervened. The man was arrested the next day, only to be released the following day. Investigations are ongoing.
