An Incredible Win for Egypt! Khaled El Anany Just Became the First Egyptian to Be Elected UNESCO Director-General!
Khaled El Enany, the renowned Egyptian Egyptologist, has just been elected Director-General of UNESCO, becoming the first Egyptian and Arab ever to hold the prestigious position.
The announcement came after a decisive vote during UNESCO’s 222nd Executive Board session in Paris, where Egypt’s ambassador confirmed that El Anany won 55 out of 57 votes, an overwhelming endorsement of his vision and expertise.
President El-Sisi’s Congratulations
President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi took to social media to congratulate El Enany, calling his election a “historic achievement for Egypt” and a reflection of the country’s legacy as “a great civilization.”
He also wished him success on this new journey, which now takes his passion for culture and heritage to a global stage.
Who is Khaled El Enany?
El Enany’s career bridges academia and public service. He served as Minister of Tourism and Antiquities (2019–2022) and Minister of Antiquities (2016–2019), overseeing some of Egypt’s most important cultural projects.
Before entering government, he was a Professor of Egyptology at Helwan University, contributing to research and education in the field.
His expertise in archaeology, cultural preservation, and heritage management makes him uniquely qualified to lead UNESCO’s mission worldwide.

As UNESCO Director-General, El Enany will now champion education, science, and culture on an international level, bringing Egypt’s rich history and civilization into global focus.
