“You look at the wives of other Muslim players like Salah & you start wondering if they’re even Muslims.”
That one tweet was all it took to spark an online firestorm.
It began when a photo of French footballer Ousmane Dembélé’s wife was posted online, showing her in modest Islamic dress.
The tweet praised her appearance as an example of a “true Muslim wife” while simultaneously throwing shade at the wives of other Muslim footballers—specifically naming Mo Salah and Karim Benzema.
The tweet quickly spiraled into a viral debate, with many social media users criticizing Mo Salah’s wife, Magi, for her attire—claiming it doesn’t align with “proper” Muslim standards.
Others took the opportunity to rehash past criticisms of the Salah family for publicly celebrating Christmas, suggesting it contradicts their Islamic identity.
As the online discourse intensified, people split into two camps. On one side were critics who argued that public figures—especially those of faith—carry a responsibility to represent their religion more traditionally.
On the other side were countless voices defending the Salah family, stressing that modesty is subjective, faith is deeply personal, and no one has the right to judge another’s spirituality based on appearance.
