Residents Spot Crocs in an Unusual Place

Residents of Zawamel village in Sharqia were alarmed when they noticed crocodiles of varying sizes in a local drainage canal, an unusual place for them.

A teacher spotted a large crocodile over 1.5 meters resting by the canal bank and shared videos online to warn the community. Villagers also reported seeing multiple crocodiles, from small juveniles to giant adults, and even discovered crocodile eggs hidden in the reeds.

The sightings raised serious concerns for the safety of children and students passing by the canal on their way to school.

Officials Take Swift Action

In response, the Sharqia governorate quickly formed six emergency teams, including environment, irrigation, civil defense, and local council units, to address the situation.

A specialized crocodile hunting team from Aswan arrived to safely capture the animals, while the Irrigation Directorate cleaned the canal, removing weeds and other obstacles to make monitoring easier.

Civil defense teams and professional divers also set traps using chicken bait to catch the crocodiles.

Officials noted that the operation could take up to a month to safely capture all the animals and restore normalcy to the area.
