Famous archaeologist Dr. Hawass, a former minister of antiquities, has started a petition that Egyptian historians and intellectuals can sign, too.
Most notably the Rosetta Stone, these artefacts include a sculptured Zodiac ceiling at the Louvre in Paris and a bust of Queen Nefertiti in Berlin.
In October, Hawass will send the petition to European museums amid what he perceives to be a worldwide zeitgeist that is reconsidering the return of historic artefacts from the colonial past to their native countries.
So far, the former minister has successfully pushed to return thousands of monuments to Egypt’s museums.
The famous 2,200-year-old Rosetta stone, which was discovered in Egypt in 1799 and has been showcased in England since 1802, may just be coming home if Dr. Zahi Hawass can pull this off.
