Following the announcement by Egyptian Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly affirming the government’s commitment to avoiding power cuts this summer, despite current regional tensions, the Egyptian government has begun rolling out a nationwide energy conservation plan to avoid electricity shortages.
Some governorates have already started implementing measures, including reducing street and public square lighting by 60%, coordinating with relevant authorities to ensure this, and strictly enforcing energy-saving protocols in all government buildings during official working hours — with complete shutdown of indoor and outdoor lighting after 8 PM.
The plan also includes setting air conditioners to 25°C, turning them off before staff leave, and switching off illuminated advertisement boards between 9 PM and midnight.
Retail shops and malls must close by 11 PM, with extended hours allowed until midnight on Thursdays and Fridays only. Other measures include dimming bright shopfront lights, reducing lighting in event venues, and cutting electricity use in all places of worship, with lights to be turned off immediately after prayers.
The plan also continues the replacement of sodium street lights with energy-saving LEDs and calls for the use of efficient lighting in government facilities, including ongoing and future projects.
The Ministry of Petroleum announced on Friday the activation of a pre-set emergency plan prioritizing natural gas supply. This includes cutting gas supplies to certain industrial sectors, maximizing the use of fuel oil (mazut) for electricity generation, and switching some plants to diesel as a precaution to maintain natural gas network stability and avoid power shedding.
The Prime Minister has instructed officials to ensure the necessary fuel supply to meet electricity demands, especially with increased consumption expected during the summer months.
Minister of Electricity Mahmoud Esmat stated that he has directed electricity distribution company heads to raise alert levels, monitor supply stability, and guarantee electricity availability for all uses.
