A tweet by Amr El-Degwy, the brother of the grandson of businesswoman Nawal El-Degwy—whose body was discovered in his apartment yesterday—sparked widespread discussion on Egyptian social media.
Amr wrote on Facebook:
“May God have mercy on you, my brother, my backbone, my support. The funeral prayer will take place after Dhuhr prayer today at El-Degwy Mosque inside MSA University in 6th of October City on Wahat Road. We will not be accepting condolences.”
The post triggered questions: Why is the family refusing condolences? Do they suspect something beyond what has been reported about the cause of death?
Amr’s statement came shortly after Egyptian authorities found the body of his brother, Ahmed El-Degwy, in his apartment. The Interior Ministry reported that Ahmed died by suicide using a licensed firearm at his residence.
Investigations revealed that he had recently returned from a mental health treatment trip abroad, arriving in Egypt just the night before the incident.
A Family in Crisis
This tragedy follows a highly publicized dispute between Dr. Nawal El-Degwy and several of her grandchildren. She had accused them of stealing roughly 300 million EGP from her 6th of October home.
Dr. El-Degwy said she discovered the theft after noticing a broken bedroom door and tampered safe codes. She had been living in her Zamalek residence since late 2023.
She noted that several family members had copies of the house keys, though she directed her accusations at one specific grandson—who was later questioned by authorities.
According to her claims, the stolen assets included:
She said the funds were part of a family inheritance she had witnessed being confirmed in a session about two years ago.
The case shocked many Egyptians, both for the amount of money reportedly involved and the question of why such wealth was kept at home instead of a bank.
