From Tuk-Tuks to ‘Cute’ Cars: A Safer, Smarter Ride for Giza Drivers

With all eyes on the new vehicle set to replace Egypt’s tuk-tuks, many drivers and families are eager to know one thing: how much will it cost, and will it actually be affordable for those who rely on tuk-tuks as their main source of income?

People are waiting for details on pricing, payment plans, and whether the new model could really be a practical upgrade without adding extra financial pressure on households.

A cleaner, safer alternative

Mohamed Marai, Assistant Secretary-General of Giza Governorate, explained that the goal is to replace tuk-tuks with safer, more modern, and fully licensed vehicles.
The new vehicle will be registered with the Traffic Department—meaning clear records for both the driver and the vehicle—and each will also have a dedicated file at the local district office to organize routes and improve traffic flow.

The first rollout will start in Al-Haram, Agouza, October City, and Hadayek October. If things go well, the program will expand to more areas within a month or two.
The new “Cute” vehicle is priced at around EGP 200,000, and the governorate has secured some incentives to make the switch easier.

Easier payments & financial incentives

Tuk-tuk owners can voluntarily trade in their vehicle for the new model and receive several benefits, including:

  • A cashback of nearly EGP 10,000 after completing licensing and receiving the new plates.

  • An additional EGP 1,000 to help with licensing fees.

In total, drivers can get back around EGP 11,000 from the vehicle’s price once all paperwork is done and work begins.
