Egypt’s Supreme Council for Media Regulation announced a temporary ban on former footballer Ahmed Hossam Mido from appearing across all Egyptian media platforms.
The move came after remarks he made during a podcast, which the council interpreted as offensive and dismissive of the Egyptian national team’s achievements between 2006 and 2010.

According to the official statement, the council’s decision was rooted in monitoring reports compiled by the Complaints Committee and the Sports Media Regulation Committee.
These reports concluded that Mido’s comments required formal review and accountability, prompting the temporary suspension while the investigation proceeds.
In response, Mido issued a statement defending himself and clarifying his intentions. He insisted that his words were taken out of context and that he never aimed to undermine the national team or cast doubt on the legitimacy of its accomplishments.
He emphasized that he was part of the squad during its golden era and remains proud to have worn the national jersey.
Mido further explained that his comments were meant to address broader cultural dynamics within the sports community, not to criticize the team, its players, or the coaching staff who achieved success through dedication and discipline.
The decision sparked immediate online buzz, with strong opinions on both sides.
Some felt the ban was overdue, arguing that public figures should be held accountable for their statements and the influence they carry.
Others believed Mido’s explanation was sincere and that his statement served as a sufficient clarification, calling the ban excessive.
A hearing is expected to be scheduled for Mido to present his perspective directly to the council.
Once the session concludes, the committees involved will issue recommendations, which will guide the council’s final ruling on whether the ban will be lifted or extended.
