A father’s approach to marriage costs is sparking debate online after a video of him discussing his daughter’s wedding arrangements went viral.
In the video, the father lays out his vision clearly: the ‘shabka’ (a gift given from the groom to bride, usually jewelry) should depend entirely on the groom’s financial capabilities. Household necessities, he adds, would be split in half between both families — with a promise to cover any gaps if the groom falls short.
When it comes to the wedding itself, the father insists it should remain small, family-oriented, and affordable. Whether lavish or modest, he believes it should only reflect what the groom can reasonably afford.
For him, character matters far more than money, telling the young man directly: “I’m buying you as a son.”
The video quickly spread across social platforms, dividing viewers into two camps.
Many applauded the father for valuing tradition, family bonds, and the groom’s character over financial burdens and extravagant displays. To them, his words reflected a refreshing reminder of what truly matters in marriage.
But others strongly disagreed, arguing that by splitting costs, the father undermined his daughter’s rights and risked making her appear less valued. Critics pointed out that in Islamic tradition, financial responsibility in marriage typically falls on the groom, not the bride’s family.
