Meet Mostafa..The Prickly Pear Seller That Broke The Internet

In one of the quiet streets of Zamalek, next to a simple prickly pear cart, stands Mustafa Ali, a native of Asyut, with his wide smile that has become familiar to both the neighborhood’s residents and visitors. He is not just a fruit vendor, but in recent days has become a social media sensation after a video of him interacting with a tourist, who was impressed by his spontaneous demeanor and cheerful approach, went viral.

Mustafa, 39 years old, tells Al-Watan that he currently resides in the Kit Kat area and travels daily to Zamalek to sell prickly pears, sticking to a routine that hasn’t changed in years. He adds: “I come early, bring the prickly pears at 9 AM, and start working at 11. I stay until 11 or 12 at night until I sell all the stock.”

Mustafa began his journey in the streets of Cairo back in 2010, trying out selling different types of fruits like bananas and mangoes before settling on selling prickly pears. He says: “It’s been about a month now that people stop to take pictures with me after the video went viral, and it really makes me happy. When I see people happy, I feel happy too.”

The price of a single prickly pear is currently 5 pounds, but the true value that Mustafa offers his customers goes beyond the price. It’s a smile, a kind word, and the Egyptian spirit of generosity that you don’t see much anymore. He says: “If someone doesn’t have money, they can still take what they want and leave. I’m not going to stop at 5 pounds.”
