Mo Salah spoke up about Palestine, and the internet is divided — some say “well said,” others ask if it’s too late.

The Egyptian football star called out UEFA after they posted a tribute to Palestinian footballer Suleiman al-Obeid — without mentioning he was killed in an Israeli airstrike in southern Gaza.
UEFA’s tribute honored al-Obeid’s football legacy but left out the circumstances of his death. Salah responded with a short but powerful tweet: how, where, and why? The three words directly challenged UEFA’s omission and quickly became a rallying cry online.
In response, UEFA said they would not comment — but their silence only intensified the conversation. Many saw it as a refusal to acknowledge the reality on the ground.
At 41, al-Obeid was known as the “Palestinian Pelé.” He played for Markaz Shabab Al-Am’ari and was a symbol of hope for children in Gaza. According to the Palestine Football Association, he was killed in southern Gaza while queueing for humanitarian aid.
Salah’s post blew up within hours, reaching millions worldwide. Soon after, major British outlets splashed it across their headlines — from the Daily Mail and The Telegraph to the Irish Examiner and more.
While many criticized him for speaking out so late, given that the crisis has been ongoing for nearly two years…
Many praised Salah for holding UEFA accountable and shining a spotlight on Palestinian suffering.
