Essam El Amir, deputy head of the council, confirmed that the measure aims to protect children and ensure digital content is safe. The council is coordinating with the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority to make the ban official.
The council highlighted several risks associated with Roblox. Backed by studies and discussed in the Egyptian Senate, the platform can expose children to inappropriate content, allow communication with strangers, and encourage excessive gaming that may affect mental health and behavior. In addition, in-game purchases can create financial strain for families.
The ban reflects a broader government effort to protect children and young users, ensure online content aligns with Egyptian values, and reduce the risks of harmful digital influences. Experts say this move also signals a shift toward stricter regulation of digital platforms in Egypt.
Many believe the Roblox ban was influenced by the series “Leaba w Alabet Begad” starring Ahmed Zaher. The show tells the story of parents whose lives are disrupted by their children’s addiction to an online game, highlighting the impact of social media and gaming on family life. Ahmed Zaher welcomed the ban, saying his show positively raised awareness about the effects of digital gaming on children.
Roblox is a global online gaming platform where users can create, share, and play games made by other players. It is a virtual world with millions of experiences, from adventure games to social hangouts. Players can customize avatars, build virtual spaces, and interact with others online.
Egypt joins a list of countries that have restricted Roblox, including Russia, Algeria, China, Qatar, Turkey, Iraq, Palestine, and Oman. While many parents and public figures like Amr Adeeb have supported the decision, some kids are mourning the loss of the popular game.
