Dr. Mohamed Mashali, often referred to as the “Doctor of the Poor,” spent over 50 years of his life serving those in need.
His practice wasn’t about wealth or fame; it was about compassion and service to the most vulnerable. For decades, he treated patients in Tanta, Egypt, particularly in the most impoverished areas.
What made him different was his complete disregard for money when it came to treating the sick.
Without a car or even a mobile phone, Dr. Mashali walked every day, even in his 80s, to his clinic. He was known to charge little to nothing, and often paid for medicines and treatment out of his own pocket, ensuring that no patient left his clinic untreated, regardless of their ability to pay.
Dr. Mashali’s decision to dedicate his life to helping the poor was born from a tragic and deeply emotional experience. One day, an 11-year-old diabetic boy came to him for treatment.
His family could not afford the insulin he needed, and worse, they could barely afford food. The boy, feeling like a burden to his family, tragically set himself on fire on the roof of their house, telling his mother that he would no longer be a burden so that his siblings could eat.
This devastating incident deeply affected Dr. Mashali. Holding the boy in his arms as he passed away, Dr. Mashali made a vow that would shape the rest of his life: he would never charge a patient again.
From that day on, he devoted himself entirely to serving the poor, offering his expertise and care without expecting anything in return.
Dr. Mashali’s decision to serve others never wavered, even in his later years, when his health was declining. Despite his age and illness, he continued to treat patients until his passing in 2020.
His humility and compassion were his trademarks, and he became a symbol of boundless generosity, known not just in Egypt but globally.
His story has now spread far beyond the borders of Egypt, with murals of his face appearing in countries like Syria and Morocco. In fact, his legacy has transcended generations and nationalities.
Even after his death, people across the globe continue to share his story, finding inspiration in his unwavering commitment to others.
