An Egyptian, Dubai-based woman sparked an intense debate about the way people raise girls and boys.
The conversation unfolded during a casual hangout with her married friends, all from the same social circle and educational background.
However, it quickly took an unexpected turn when the topic shifted to parenting, specifically the societal expectations tied to raising girls versus boys.

The woman and her friends were discussing family life and the responsibilities tied to raising children. One man, who has two daughters, shared a concerning opinion about raising sons. He stated that the real letdown for him would be if his son wasn’t “manly” enough.
But when it came to his daughters, he didn’t seem concerned about their roles or ambitions. According to him, it didn’t matter if a girl balanced responsibilities or not because, at the end of the day, they’d simply “get married off” and wouldn’t have to worry about career or personal success.
The woman fired back and strongly disagreed with the notion that a girl’s purpose should be limited to preparing for marriage.
She shared her belief that the first person who should teach a girl to be strong and capable is her father, emphasizing that the responsibility to support and empower a girl should fall on both parents—especially the father.
The woman then offered some valuable advice for parents: feminism is a mindset, not a movement against men, but a fight for equal opportunities for girls in society.
She went on to clarify that feminism’s ultimate goal isn’t for women to become like men or mirror their roles; it’s about ensuring women have the freedom to pursue their own paths without being restricted by outdated gender norms.
Raising girls to be independent, strong, and capable of navigating the world on their own terms is key.
Moreover, she argued, parents cannot raise their sons to have responsibilities and duties that align with traditional views of masculinity, while simultaneously neglecting their daughters and treating them as if their only purpose is to eventually be “married off.”
While many agreed wholeheartedly with the woman’s perspective, not everyone shared the same sentiment. Some argued that the traditional lines between “boy” and “girl” roles are becoming more and more blurred.
In today’s world, they believe that gender expectations are evolving, and the roles that used to be ascribed to each gender are no longer relevant.
