“Smart Chic and Hijab Don’t Go Together” Or So A Restaurant Claims

A Dress Code Check at the Door

It all started when a hijabi woman arrived at a well-known restaurant in New Cairo. She had a reservation, showed up on time, and dressed smart.

But the moment she reached the door, the host gave her a long look up and down before asking if she was sure her booking was for this place — because, he said, “there’s a dress code.”

When she pushed back and asked what exactly was wrong with her outfit, the answers got vague. After some back-and-forth, the host finally showed her in, but the tension didn’t stop there.

The Real Issue Surfaces

Inside, the woman quickly noticed that other guests were dressed just like her — casual but neat.

Yet she felt eyes on her. Staff kept glancing over until her husband finally asked if there was an issue.

That’s when it slipped out: the problem wasn’t her clothes — it was her hijab. The owner, she says, didn’t want that “vibe” for the place. In his eyes, “smart chic” and hijab didn’t mix.

A Story That Hit Home

She left the restaurant with more than just a ruined dinner — she left with a story that touched a nerve for many Egyptians.

In her words, the problem isn’t just one restaurant’s policy but a wider belief that the hijab doesn’t belong in certain place.

But not everyone agreed. Some online defended the owner’s right to choose who fits his brand.

One story — two sides, and a debate that’s far from over.
