Students at the American University in Cairo staged a protest to oppose the visit of former U.S. Ambassador Daniel C. Kurtzer.

Yesterday, students gathered outside a lecture hall, holding banners, chanting, and wearing Palestinian keffiyehs and jerseys.
For over three hours, they made it clear that Kurtzer was not welcome on campus.
Despite being threatened with the confiscation of their IDs, students remained steadfast, joined by some professors who stood in solidarity.
The invitation came amid extreme tension in Gaza, and students saw the visit as a normalization of policies they consider colonial and racist. Kurtzer’s past statements and actions, which many interpret as dehumanizing toward Palestinians, added to the frustration.
Forty student clubs, including the Palestinian Club, formally emailed the administration and signed statements demanding the event be canceled—requests that were ignored.
This is not the first time Kurtzer has been invited to the university. On previous visits, students also voiced strong opposition to hosting figures with similar ideologies, emphasizing that such voices are not welcome on campus.
Supporters of the visit argue that the event was not a lecture but a student-to-student exchange between Princeton University and local students. Kurtzer’s role was limited to moderating and offering insight if called upon.
Advocates say that preventing him from speaking also silences dialogue, and they highlight his decades-long diplomatic and academic career, including participation in major peace negotiations.
Daniel C. Kurtzer is a veteran U.S. diplomat and academic. He served as U.S. ambassador to Israel and Egypt, participating in peace talks from the Madrid Conference in 1991 to Sharm El Sheikh in 2000. For over 20 years, he has been a professor at Princeton University’s School of Public and International Affairs.
