The skies over Egypt and the Arab world will put on a spectacular show tonight, Sunday, as one of the most significant celestial events unfolds: a total lunar eclipse.
According to the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics, the eclipse will begin at 6:28 PM Cairo time, when the moon enters Earth’s penumbral shadow. The total phase will start at 8:31 PM and reach its peak at 9:12 PM, painting the moon in deep red hues, often referred to as a “blood moon.” The phenomenon will gradually end at 11:55 PM.

In light of the event, Egypt’s Ministry of Endowments has announced that Salat al-Khusuf (the eclipse prayer) will be held across major mosques nationwide, reviving the prophetic tradition of offering special prayers during cosmic occurrences. Regional directorates have been instructed to organize the prayers at designated times in large mosques throughout the country.
The rare eclipse, visible across much of the Arab region, is expected to last nearly five and a half hours, offering astronomy enthusiasts, photographers, and the public a remarkable opportunity to witness a natural wonder safely with the naked eye.
