“Shahd Will Participate In The Olympics Because Egypt’s Interest Is Above Everything” President of the Cyclist Federation Responded to Backlash

Social media recently witnessed the mass calling to suspend Shahd Saeed, a cyclist who was recently suspended for a year, and fined for intentionally pushing her opponent Jana Eliwa in a local competition.

During the race, Jana had advanced and was about to win third place when Shahd grabbed her- as Jana clarified, and pushed her, causing her serious injuries.

Jana had sustained a shoulder dislocation, broken ribs, memory loss, and a concussion.

The calling to expel and disqualify Shahd from the Olympics was intensified when pictures of her in the official uniform went viral on social media, leading to a public call to expel her and rectify the situation.

Many have described the situation as “catastrophic and unfair.”

Jana told Hany Hathout she wishes Shahd remained in the Olympics

During a phone interview with famous sports presenter Hany Hathout, Jana expressed her wish for Shahd to stay in the Olympics, as her athletic level would be clear.

She added, “Shahd will get last place in the Olympics, she has never won at the republic level. I don’t care whether she wins, but I assure you that she will not win in the final, and if she is required to reach 30 points, she will not reach 29, I’m not trying to demean her, but these are her qualifications and athletic level.”

President of the Egyptian Cycling Federation:

President of the Egyptian Cycling Federation Mohamed Wageeh Azzam responded to the backlash by saying “Shahd will participate in the Olympics because Egypt’s interest is above anything”

Egyptian Cycling Federation President Wageh Azam revealed earlier that the federation is leaning towards excluding Shahad Saeed, a cyclist, from the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Azzam said in his statements to MBC Egypt: “There is a possibility of contact occurring in races, which is a natural thing, intentionally or not. In these cases, we assume intentionality and the referee determines the penalty by the International Federation’s law.”
He added, “The matter is being discussed and we are speaking with the Minister of Sports, and the decision will be made officially. In this situation, we are leaning against her traveling.”

Ministry of Youth and Sports:

The Ministry of Youth and Sports addressed the Olympic Committee to study the position of Shahad Saeed in the Paris Olympics in accordance with international conventions and ethical rules.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports sent a letter to the Egyptian Olympic Committee for guidance regarding re-examining the position of the athlete’s participation and the procedures taken by the Federation in this regard and providing the Ministry with a detailed report following the relevant local and international regulations in this regard and taking into account all international sports charters and standards and taking into account ethical rules.
