A distressing video recently circulated on social media, sparking widespread outrage.
The footage shows a man repeatedly slapping an elderly man, 3am Ghareeb, who is a tenant in a building in Suez.
The incident unfolded when the building owner, frustrated by the tenant’s status under the old rent system, attempted to forcibly evict him.
The video quickly caught the attention of many, leaving people horrified by the act of violence against a vulnerable individual.

Following the viral video, the Ministry of Interior confirmed that the two men involved, a clothing merchant and his brother, were arrested after they admitted to the assault.
Both men allegedly attempted to evict 3am Ghareeb from the building where he has lived for years. Despite their arrest, further investigations are ongoing to fully understand the circumstances of the incident and determine the appropriate legal actions.

In the aftermath of the incident, the Governor of Suez took personal action, visiting 3am Ghareeb at his home to check on his wellbeing. The governor’s visit was a show of solidarity and concern for the elderly man, as the attack left him shaken and vulnerable.
Additionally, a political party in Suez stepped forward, announcing that they would provide 3am Ghareeb with a new apartment, with rent fully covered for life. This move aims to ensure that the elderly man will live out his years in dignity, without the fear of eviction or financial strain.
In response to the incident, the Ministry of Awqaf issued a public statement that resonated deeply with many. The ministry emphasized the importance of respect, particularly toward the elderly, and reminded the public that “respect isn’t weakness, and kindness isn’t humiliation.”

According to the Ministry, these values reflect true character, strength, and morality. They added that anyone who insults an elder only dishonors themselves.
This message resonated widely, particularly as the video brought attention to the alarming lack of respect shown toward a vulnerable member of society.
While the internet continues to be outraged by the violent assault, some are also turning their attention to the root cause of these conflicts: the old rent laws.
These laws, which were designed to protect tenants, have caused a growing number of disputes over the years, especially as the rent system has evolved.
Amr Adib commented on the situation, suggesting that we will likely see more cases like this as a result of recent changes to the old rent law. He reminded viewers that, earlier this year, there were widespread concerns about the potential consequences of the changes, and the government had promised to protect tenants.
Now, with incidents like this one coming to light, the question remains: What happens next?
