Last Friday, the Head of the Global Program on Control of Neglected Tropical Diseases, Raman Velayudhan at the World Health Organization announced that half the world is at risk of contracting Dengue fever which is transmitted by infected mosquitos.<\/p>\n
Velayudhan explained that roughly 100 to 400 Million people contract dengue fever annually.<\/p>\n
The United States of America reported 2.8 Million cases of Dengue Fever and 1,280 deaths back in 2022.<\/p>\n
However, the epidemic didn’t stop at the start of 2023 but increased.<\/p>\n
Since the beginning of the epidemic in July 2023, The Americas have reported 3 million infected cases and 1302 deaths.<\/p>\n
Velayudhan added that there is also an increasing risk in South American countries such as Bolivia, Paraguay, and Peru.<\/p>\n
He also stated that it’s early to get reports from Asian countries as they usually account for 70% of the world’s disease burden.<\/p>\n
Dengue Fever is usually contracted through the bite of an infected mosquito that has been exposed to landfills and swamps.<\/p>\n
Infected individuals usually display symptoms of headache, pain behind the eyes, joint and muscle pain, and fever.<\/p>\n
Infected individuals usually recover from dengue in a few days but in rare cases, it can cause death.<\/p>\n
