A video shared by a foreign tourist has gone viral on social media after allegedly capturing a request for a “tip” in exchange for easing procedures at a checkpoint in South Sinai.
In the clip, the tourist claims he was stopped during his trip, with some of his belongings — including a drone — held as part of the inspection process. He further alleges that the officer implied he could continue his journey and retrieve his items if he offered a “gift” or payment.
The video quickly gained traction online, triggering widespread backlash and raising concerns over potential misconduct.

In response, Egypt’s Ministry of Interior confirmed that an investigation was immediately launched into the incident. Authorities clarified that the individual seen in the video is not an active police officer, but a former officer who had already been dismissed from service due to disciplinary violations.
The ministry emphasized that the incident represents an isolated case and does not reflect the institution as a whole. It also reiterated its commitment to maintaining discipline and addressing any violations that fall outside the framework of the law.
Legal and administrative measures have since been taken in connection with the incident, in line with the ministry’s stated policy of transparency and accountability.
