In 1968, while the high dam was being constructed in Egypt, the Nile water kept rising, threatening to endanger Ramses II’s statue.

So, to avoid endangering thousands of years of history, Egypt conducted a miraculous archaeological mission to transfer the statues to a safe location.

The entire site was cut up into large pieces, from 20 to 30 tons, and the parts were dismantled and reinstalled again at the new location of Abu Simbel.

The statue now lies at the height of 65 m and 200 m above the river level.

The entire mission cost reached almost $40 million, from 1964 to 1968.
