At least 20 people have been killed and over 52 injured in a suicide bombing that targeted a Greek Orthodox church in Damascus on Sunday, according to Syria’s Ministry of Interior.
The attack took place at Mar Elias Church, one of the most well-known churches in the capital, during a time of worship. According to officials, the attacker opened fire on the congregation before detonating an explosive vest inside the church.
There has been no immediate claim of responsibility, but Syrian authorities stated that the bomber was affiliated with the ISIS terrorist organization, also referred to as Daesh.
Videos circulating on social media show scenes of devastation: shattered glass, overturned pews, and lifeless bodies. The church’s interior suffered significant damage, and emergency crews were seen responding on site.
Syria’s civil defense confirmed that teams were working to transfer the deceased to hospitals and secure the area. Hospitals in Damascus have since reported receiving dozens of injured worshippers, some in critical condition.
The attack was quickly condemned by countries across the region and beyond. Statements of solidarity and outrage were issued by the foreign ministries of Turkey, Jordan, Iraq, Greece, Cyprus, the UAE, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, among others.
The United Nations Special Envoy for Syria also called the bombing a “heinous crime” and emphasized the need for accountability.
The Syrian government stated that it is doing everything in its power to track down those responsible and to safeguard churches and other vulnerable places of worship across the capital and the country.
As investigations continue, the incident has once again highlighted the fragile security situation in Syria, even in areas that had seen relative calm in recent months.
This story is still developing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
