As part of a new deal, Pfizer will manufacture its COVID-19 vaccine in Saudi Arabia. This deal is designed to keep the kingdom competitive in the biotechnology sector.

According to the Gulf News, the Saudi Ministry of Industry, the King Abdullah International Centre for Medical Research (Kimar), and the Pfizer Scientific Foundation have agreed to lay the groundwork for the production of viral and genetic vaccines in the Kingdom.

The agreement was reached on the sidelines of the Riyadh Global Medical Biotechnology Summit 2021.

Saudi Arabia has also signed preliminary agreements with AstraZeneca to produce vaccines locally and strengthen its medical research capabilities.

The kingdom has recently pledged 20 million SAR to provide COVID-19 vaccines to 22 developing member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
