5 Things Every Expat Needs To Know Before Moving To Saudi Arabia

Avatar

With several gigaprojects in the works, the demand for skilled man- or woman-power is huge here. Job opportunities are aplenty in this country that’s leaping forward at a dizzying pace.

So if you’re one of the many expats who are moving to Saudi Arabia anytime soon, we’ve got some great news for you! Saudi Arabia is a fantastic place to live, with plenty of opportunities for career growth, an abundance of cultural experiences, and a welcoming local community. But before you jet off,, here are a few things you need to know.

1. Be Prepared To Pay An Advance Rent Of At Least Three Months

Landlords in Saudi Arabia require three months’ rent upfront, so make sure to save up! Your employer may offer housing allowance in advance to help with this, so be sure to ask.

2. Don’t Take The Heat Lightly

The bright, sunny day may be all the more alluring, especially if you are coming from countries up north. But the temperatures can get a tad too high here, so opportunities for basking in the sun are aplenty, but remember to always lather on sunscreen and stay hydrated!

3. The Day Begins At Night
Don’t be surprised if the empty streets come alive after dark. Heck, you can even get your shawarma fix at 2 a.m.

4. Carry Your Iqama Or Digital Iqama Everywhere

You always need to have your residence permit, or iqama, on you as you move around town. With Saudi Arabia embracing digital unlike anywhere else of late, you can have your digital ID on you, and that would be perfectly fine as well. You’ll find your digital ID on the Tawakalna Services app.

5. It’s Super Safe Here

Regardless of what stereotypes you had before coming here, throw them all out the window, as Saudi Arabia has super low crime rates. You can walk around late into the night without a care in the world. Just take a look at how people leave their shopping carts unattended during prayer time—that’s how secure it is!
