Rumors of new measures to be implemented before women’s driving begins next year have been doing the rounds for quite some time now. But now there has been official confirmation on the new measures.

According to Arab News, local media quoted that Turki Al-Taaimi, director general of marketing and corporate communication at the ministry, has said that the new signs and guides will direct drivers to the new speed limits, which have been set at 140 km per hour for small vehicles.

He also said that, as part of the program to raise the level of road safety, the ministry is undertaking a number of projects that contribute to speed reduction, such as vibration bumps on the sides of highways.

They will be implemented in the first quarter of 2018 and will be first seen on the Riyadh-Dammam, Riyadh-Taif and Riyadh-Qassim highways.

These measures are being taken to help cut the number of road deaths. Car accidents have killed 9,031 people last year across the country with an average of  25 deaths per day.

The rate of increase is at its highest since 2007.
