The eagerly anticipated Asian Games, which were postponed from last year owing to coronavirus restrictions in the city of Hangzhou, began on Sunday.

At the opening ceremony, over 185 athletes representing 27 different sports proudly raised the flag of Qatar

12,000 participants from over 45 countries will compete in 40 sports at the games.

Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani of Qatar, the President of the Qatar Olympic Committee, Dr. Thani bin Abdul Rahman al-Kuwari, Secretary-General Jassim bin Rashid al-Buainain, and others were present at the opening ceremony.

High jumper Mutaz Barsham, who memorably won gold with Italian teammate Gianmarco Tamberi at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, is one of the athletes seeking to keep up his strong Asian Games record.

Fares Ibrahim, who gained gold in Tokyo and silver in Jakarta during the most recent Asian Games, is also anticipated to perform well in Hangzhou.

Even though the events didn’t actually begin until Saturday, numerous sports had already begun.
