Qatar knows how to turn fitness into a full-on celebration, and National Sport Day is proof!
Held every year on the second Tuesday of February, National Sport Day is officially a public holiday, giving everyone the perfect excuse to ditch the desk, lace up their trainers, and get moving. Offices pause, schools close, and the country collectively steps outside to walk, run, cycle, stretch, and play together.
National Sport Day was established by Amiri Resolution No. (80) of 2011, with a clear mission: make physical activity part of everyday life in Qatar. The very first National Sport Day was celebrated in 2012, marking a major national push toward healthier living and long-term wellness.
From the start, the idea wasn’t about elite athletes or competitive sports, it was about everyone. Families, friends, colleagues, and entire communities were encouraged to take part, no matter their age or fitness level.
At its core, National Sport Day aims to promote an active lifestyle and raise awareness about the health risks linked to inactivity, such as heart disease and diabetes. Parks, promenades, stadiums, and public spaces across the country come alive with free activities, fitness classes, sports events, and community challenges — all designed to make movement fun and accessible.
In a world where busy schedules and screen time often take over, National Sport Day is Qatar’s annual reminder that health comes first. It’s about balance, wellbeing, and showing that staying active doesn’t have to be complicated, sometimes, it’s as simple as moving together.
So whether you’re running a marathon, joining a yoga session, cycling with friends, or just going for a long walk, National Sport Day is your sign to get out there and enjoy it.
One day, one nation, all about movement!!!
