Qatar Issues Warning Over Selected Infant Formula Batches

The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) in Qatar has issued a public warning advising consumers not to use specific batches of infant formula products after concerns of possible contamination.

According to the Ministry, the affected batches were withdrawn from the local market following suspicions of contamination with a toxin linked to Bacillus cereus bacteria

The advisory urges parents and caregivers to carefully check product names and batch numbers before use, prioritising the health and safety of infants.

MoPH confirmed it received an official notification from the manufacturer regarding the issue, prompting the Food Safety Department to immediately withdraw all related and potentially affected products from the market. Retail outlets and pharmacies were instructed to implement recall procedures without delay, while inspection teams carried out intensive campaigns to ensure no affected products remain available.

Random samples from the same brand were collected for laboratory testing, and analyses are currently ongoing to confirm product safety.

The Ministry also confirmed that no illness cases linked to the products have been reported so far.

Why Bacillus cereus is a concern

Bacillus cereus is a type of bacteria that can produce toxins capable of causing food poisoning. In infants, whose immune systems are still developing, exposure can be particularly risky. The bacteria may lead to symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and in rare cases, more serious complications if not properly managed.

MoPH stressed that any updates regarding the investigation and laboratory results will be announced immediately as they become available, while continuing to coordinate closely with the manufacturer to ensure consumer safety.
