Qatar Urges Israel Against Targeting Hamas Figures Within Its Borders Amid Diplomatic Uncertainties

Amid rising tensions, Israeli media reports indicate that Qatar has urged Israel not to target Hamas officials within its borders, following recent high-profile assassinations in Iran and Lebanon.

Kan11 News, citing unnamed sources, reported that Qatar’s request was communicated through undisclosed channels amidst evolving diplomatic relations between the two nations. This plea allegedly came after Israel’s killing of Ismail Haniyeh, the Hamas political chief, in Iran last July, and the death of Saleh al-Arouri, the deputy chairman of Hamas’s political bureau, in Beirut this January.

Rumors of Hamas Bureau Closure in Doha Denied by Qatar

The latest development comes days after rumors suggested Qatar would close the Hamas political bureau in Doha—a claim swiftly denied by Qatar’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Majed Al-Ansari. Al-Ansari clarified during a Saturday press conference that Doha remains committed to mediation efforts but has paused talks until both sides show genuine willingness to negotiate.

Further disputing these claims, a Reuters report suggesting the bureau’s closure following U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration’s directives was labeled inaccurate by Qatar. The office, established in 2012 at Washington’s request, has long been a focal point in regional diplomacy.

In response to ongoing mediation efforts, Al-Ansari confirmed that Qatar had notified both Israel and Hamas about its decision to halt facilitation should there be no progress during talks held in late October, which concluded without any significant breakthroughs.
