The 40,000-capacity stadium, Stadium 974, is the first fully-demountable tournament venue in World Cup history!
The stadium hosted its first match last November 30th, which was the opening day of the 2021 Arab Cup featuring United Arab Emirates and Syria going head-to-head for the win.
The stadium, originally known as Ras Abu Aboud, has distinctive architecture as it’s the first entirely dismountable stadium in the history of the world cup, and is also shockingly built primarily out of shipping containers.
Seven World Cup games will take place at this venue, which is located in a prime location, 10km east from central Doha, near Doha Port and right across from the breathtaking West Bay skyline.
Stadium 974 is a great example of sustainability for many reasons..
Firstly, it does not require cooling tech which has translated to a 40% reduction in water usage. Secondly, the shipping containers used to deliver building materials have actually become part of the venue’s facade while the rest of the stadium was built using recycled steel.
Stadium 974 is the seventh World Cup venue built by the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC). With Khalifa International, Al Janoub, Education City, Ahmad Bin Ali, Al Bayt, and Al Thumama preceding it.
