A big diplomatic moment unfolded in Doha as Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada, completed a historic state visit to Qatar. From high-level talks at the Amiri Diwan to meetings across finance, health, and investment, the visit marked a major step forward in Qatar–Canada relations and opened the door to deeper cooperation across key sectors.

Prime Minister Carney met with His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani at the Amiri Diwan, where both leaders discussed strengthening bilateral ties. Conversations focused on economic cooperation, investment, defence, education, health, and regional and global developments, with a shared commitment to expanding long-term collaboration.

During the visit, Qatar and Canada announced new frameworks to elevate cooperation in trade, investment, security, technology, and finance. Several Memoranda of Understanding were signed, including plans to establish a Joint Economic Commission, expand air connectivity, and move forward on investment protection and double taxation agreements.

Beyond official talks, Prime Minister Carney also met Qatar’s Central Bank Governor and the Minister of Public Health, highlighting cooperation in financial and healthcare sectors. The visit concluded with both countries reaffirming their commitment to a long-term strategic partnership, including collaboration ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026 and stronger cultural ties during the Qatar–Canada Year of Culture.
