From Surviving To Thriving: Qatar’s Groundbreaking Support For Cancer Survivors

There’s big news coming out of Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and it’s giving hope a whole new meaning. Qatar just put out its very first oncology rehabilitation framework. Instead of just focusing on surviving cancer, this new approach is all about helping people live again – stronger, happier, and more independent than ever. It’s the first of its kind in the country, and it’s putting survivors at the center of their healing journey.

A plan that tunes into survivors’ needs

What makes this even more special is how it came together. HMC teamed up with the Qatar Rehabilitation Institute and the National Center for Cancer Care and Research to build a plan that actually listens to what survivors need. With cancer cases on the rise and more people surviving thanks to better treatment, this couldn’t have come at a better time. Dr. Mohamed Salem Al Hassan called it a fresh chapter for cancer care in Qatar, with a strong focus on teamwork and long-term support.

Healing the whole person

The program focuses on the person as a whole, covering everything from physical recovery to emotional support, social reintegration and psychological wellbeing. It’s based on global best practices from the WHO and tailored with Qatar’s culture and health system in mind. Dr. Hanadi Al Hamad described it as a shift toward care that restores dignity and independence, making sure patients don’t just go back to normal, but move forward with purpose.

This initiative also reflects HMC’s push for top-tier, people-first care, and ties in beautifully with Qatar’s National Health Strategy 2024–2030 and the broader Qatar National Vision 2030. It also echoes global goals from the WHO to make rehabilitation an essential part of health coverage. It’s a proud moment for healthcare in Qatar and a powerful step forward for every survivor!
