In a shocking case reported by Al Sharq Newspaper on April 27, 2025, the Civil Court of First Instance ruled in favor of a man who was the victim of an elaborate cheque fraud. The court ordered his former friend and business partner to pay him QR 2 million in compensation for material and moral damages.
More than ten years ago, the victim asked his friend to help him secure a QR 162,000 car loan. The friend agreed but demanded a blank cheque as a guarantee. He promised to return the cheque once the loan was repaid.
The victim paid off the loan, but the friend later claimed he had “lost” the blank cheque.
A decade later, the victim received an unexpected arrest warrant. His former friend had forged the blank cheque, writing an inflated amount of QR 28.5 million, and filed a criminal complaint to demand payment.
Following an investigation, the Forgery Investigation Department confirmed that the victim had not handwritten the fraudulent cheque details. The courts found the friend guilty of forgery, sentencing him to three years in prison and imposing a QR 100,000 bail. The sentence was upheld even after an appeal.
Meanwhile, the victim’s lawyer, Attorney Maneh Nasser Jashan, fought tirelessly to clear his client’s name. After persistent appeals, the Court of Cassation finally issued a ruling that fully acquitted the victim.
Following the acquittal, the victim filed a civil lawsuit seeking compensation for the financial losses and emotional suffering caused by the ordeal. The Civil Court of First Instance ultimately ruled in his favor, awarding QR 2 million in damages.
This case highlights the serious consequences of betrayal and fraud — and how, even after years of silence, justice can prevail.
