Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, recently shared his candid thoughts on the region’s sudden escalation, expressing a ‘big sense of betrayal’ following recent missile and drone attacks. Speaking to Sky News for the first time since these events, he highlighted the significant impact on ongoing diplomatic efforts and the pursuit of a peaceful neighborhood.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani didn’t hold back, describing a profound ‘big sense of betrayal’ after Qatar and other Gulf countries faced unexpected attacks. He revealed that these strikes felt distinctly pre-planned, hitting just an hour after the war began, which was particularly significant. Before this sudden escalation, Gulf nations, including Qatar, had repeatedly stated their firm commitment to staying out of any attacks or wars against their neighbors, always advocating for a truly peaceful neighborhood for all.

For quite some time, Qatar had been playing a crucial and active role, diligently acting as a bridge between Iran and the United States to help them find much-needed diplomatic solutions. However, the Prime Minister lamented that this ‘miscalculation’ by the Iranians, specifically their decision to attack the Gulf countries, has unfortunately ‘destroyed everything’ that had been built. He explained that Qatar had genuinely been a ‘glimpse of hope’ to bring some much-needed diplomatic solutions to the current conflict, a vital role now severely jeopardized by these actions.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani issued a clear and urgent warning: if these attacks are ongoing and the violence continues, it will become utterly impossible for anyone to step in and help with mediation. He stressed that every country would inevitably be too busy engaging and defending its own borders and people to offer assistance. His direct message to the involved parties was straightforward: you shouldn’t include or involve any of the other countries in this war, as doing so is absolutely essential for any future de-escalation efforts and for finding a diplomatic solution that genuinely addresses everyone’s concerns, including those of the United States.
