Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Amir of Qatar, announced three days of mourning and ordered flags lowered to half-staff in honor of the late Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, Amir of Kuwait, who passed away today at the age of 86.
Sheikh Tamim said in a statement that Kuwait had lost a wise leader who was loyal to his country and people, and who worked to strengthen the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and promote peace in the region. He also praised Sheikh Nawaf’s efforts to advance the Arab and Islamic causes.
The statement said that the news of Sheikh Nawaf’s death was received with great sorrow and sadness. Sheikh Tamim prayed to Allah to have mercy on Sheikh Nawaf’s soul and rest it in peace in paradise. He also prayed that Allah would grant patience and solace to the royal family, the Kuwaiti people, and the people of Qatar.
About Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah
Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah was born in Kuwait City in 1937. He was the 16th Amir of Kuwait and the 10th Head of the House of Sabah. He was a member of the Kuwaiti National Assembly from 1963 to 1982 and served as Minister of Defense from 1982 to 2003. He was elected Amir of Kuwait in 2020 following the death of his half-brother, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah.
Sheikh Nawaf was known for his wisdom, diplomatic skills, and commitment to peace. He was also a strong supporter of the GCC and of Kuwait’s role in regional affairs.
Sheikh Nawaf’s legacy will be one of a wise and respected leader who worked to promote peace and stability in the region. He will be remembered for his efforts to strengthen Kuwait’s economy and to improve the lives of his people.

“The State of Qatar and its people mourn the loss of the brotherly Kuwaiti leadership, His Highness Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, who passed away today.
“With great sorrow, we received the news of the death of His Highness Sheikh Nawaf, a wise leader who devoted his life to serving his country and the Arab and Islamic nations. He was a man of great wisdom, generosity, and compassion.
“Under his leadership, Kuwait enjoyed security and stability, and he worked tirelessly to strengthen relations with neighboring countries and promote peace and cooperation in the region.
“On behalf of the Qatari people, I extend my deepest condolences to the royal family of Kuwait and to the Kuwaiti people. We pray to Allah to have mercy on His soul and grant him a place in paradise. We also pray for strength and patience for the Kuwaiti people during this difficult time.
“To Allah we belong, and to Him we shall return.”
