Recently, MWC 2025 took place in Doha, marking a significant milestone as the first time the event was held in the Middle East. Abdul Majid Awan, Executive at Smashi Business, had the chance to talk to John Hoffman, CEO and Director of GSMA, about the strategic decision behind bringing this flagship event to the region and its potential impact on the future of tech.
Smashi Business: What led to the decision to bring MWC 2025 to Doha?
John Hoffman: The selection of Doha wasn’t a spontaneous decision. Discussions with Qatar’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) began over three years ago. What attracted us was Qatar’s unique combination of visionary planning and proven implementation capabilities. It’s one thing to have a vision, but it’s another to bring the players together to implement it for the future. Qatar’s track record of execution, backed by its national vision, made it an ideal partner for the long-term commitment—a five-year deal that positions Doha as a major player in the global tech ecosystem.

SB: How did the collaboration with Qatar begin?
JH: It started with GSMA’s Mobile360 program, which launched in Doha last year with a few thousand attendees focused on regional thought leadership. MWC Doha 2025 represents a significant expansion, featuring over 300 speakers, 250 exhibitors, and more than 100 companies showcasing future innovations in the “Four Years From Now” zone. What sets this event apart is its comprehensive approach. Beyond the exhibition floor, GSMA’s ministerial program has convened over 50 government delegations to discuss policy development—a crucial element I believe sets the foundation for sustainable growth.
SB: What role do you see artificial intelligence playing in the future of tech?
JH: We’re in the early stages, but I think the adoption curve and the actual AI results are going to come very, very quickly. The convergence of 5G, IoT, proper policy frameworks, and AI with big data is going to drive transformation in the region. It’s all coming together, and I see AI as a key piece in that puzzle.

Looking ahead:
SB: How do you view MWC Doha in the context of the region’s future?
JH: MWC Doha is more than just an event. It’s a long-term showcase for a region gaining prominence in the tech space. In the past, innovations from the Middle East were often overshadowed at events like MWC Barcelona. MWC Doha gives the region a dedicated platform to demonstrate its technological capabilities to a global audience. With Qatar’s goal of becoming a “startup nation” and its $4 trillion sovereign wealth fund-backed regional economy, this partnership with GSMA is set to thrive for years to come.
