An increasing demand for an enriching cultural life has led to the growth of the independent cinema scene in Dubai.
Cultural venues, like Alserkal Avenue, have played a critical role in bolstering this phenomenon.
As a result, Dubai has paved way for the first art-house cinema, Cinema Akil located in the same venue, the doors of which is opening today with the premiere of two exceptionally amazing independent films.
It started as a pop-up cinema platform by Butheina Kazim back in 2014 but has now been converted into fully fledged art-house cinema venue with a permanent home at Warehouse 68 in Alserkal Avenue.
The first day of the cinema will be marked with the screening of two regional premieres, Yomeddine, a Palme d’Or nominee directed by Abu Bakr Shawky and critically-acclaimed documentary film McQueen, about the rise and fall of fashion designer Alexander McQueen that has been directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui.
With two daily screenings, one at 7pm followed by a screening at 9.30pm, movie buffs will find their hands full.
