Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has confirmed that it has banned the use of electric scooters on sidewalks in the emirate.
However, there’s a catch!
The ban of electric scooters applies to rental companies, but not the private ownership of these vehicles.
That means companies such as KIWIride, Qwikly, and Skoot Mobility, who have a fleet of scooters available to hire, will halt their operations.
H.E highlighted that considering public safety is RTA’s priority, and to regulate vehicle use in the city, RTA has issued a circular to all electric scooter rental companies to stop their activites,

until new regulations are in force, based on the findings of a study being conducted by RTA.

As per the new mandate, the ban would be in effect until “new regulations are in force, based on the findings of a study being conducted by RTA.”
The ban in Dubai follows in the footsteps of the French government, who, in October last year, made the move to ban electric scooters from sidewalks.
