If you know a camel that is just lounging around, then perhaps you can convince it to enter the competition because almost AED95 million in prizes are up for grabs.
The first annual Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Camel Race Festival is being held in Dubai this year and it is going to award the fastest camel in the Gulf.
Competitors will compete for prizes of: cash, swords, rifles and luxury vehicles.
The Camel festival has already begun at the racetrack in Al Marmoun and races start daily from 7am to 10am and 2pm to 5pm until Tuesday, February 20.
Female and male camels compete together unless they are “mature” – aged six and up.
Mature camels compete in eight km races in separate categories on the last three days of the competition, from February 18 to February 20.
The fastest mature male will be given a dagger and AED800,000, while the fastest mature female camel will be given a gold-plated sword and AED1 million.
For those without a camel, don’t be disappointed – you can get yourself one at an auction by Gulf Breeders for just AED300,000.
