The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has today cleared the confusion regarding the use of VPNs in the UAE. There were social media rumours over its use after the recently issued amendment on the Federal Law No. (5) of 2012.
But the TRA has stated that the law is not new in its essence. The only changes were related to tightening the penalty or punishment for any violation when VPNs are used in a fraudulent act and the intention is to commit a crime.
Through a series of tweets it said there is no regulation that prevents VPN used by companies, institutions and banks to gain access to internal networks via the internet. In short, companies are free to use it BUT they have to make sure the activity does not break any of the country’s laws.
