If only we could stop wasting hours and hours on long flights and put that time to better use…right? Well, that might just be an option if industrial designer Charles Bombardier (yep, that’s his real name) gets his way. It’ll be a little while before it’s available and we imagine it’ll cost you a fair bit too but we’re excited all the same.
‘The Antipode’ will be a luxury business jet capable of reaching Mach 24 – 12 times faster than Concorde – it’s designed to carry a maximum of 10 people up to 20,000km/12,427miles in under an hour.
The plan is that the aircraft will have rocket boosters attached to the wings so it will be capable of taking off from any airfield. The accelerators would provide the craft with enough thrust to climb to 40,000 feet and reach Mach 5, then separate from it and fly back to base.
Bombardier explains: ‘The aircraft’s onboard computer would then ignite its supersonic combustion ramjet engine and accelerate up to Mach 24.
“I wanted to create an aircraft concept capable of reaching its antipode—or diametrical opposite—as fast as possible.”
It sounds pretty complicated to us and we might be waiting quite a while until the Antipode hits the skies, and even longer before we can afford to be sat in one of the precious 10 seats on board. But we can dream…
